What is This?
Videos for Teaching and Learning means implementing videos in the ways you teach and evaluate student learning.
Why Does it Matter?
It really can give you a lot of flexibility! You can use it to create a everything from a welcome video for incoming students and their parents, to allowing students to submit a video as an alternative to say writing a paper.
I believe that Videos will end up being an integral part of my classroom. I can see so many uses and benefits to working them into the way I conduct my teaching. Following are a couple of my favorite ideas for implementing videos into my future classrooms.

Using Videos as a Teacher
Here are some of the ways I am really excited about implementing into my classroom, as well as a few simple sample videos that I make relatively quickly.

- A Virtual Open House. What is this you might ask? Well, it's quite simple really. Everyone has their Open House at the beginning of the school year, but not all of the families are able to make it to such an event. This will allow the parents to see the classroom their child will be spending their days in, and also a brief introduction to you the teacher.
- Conferencing with people through tools such as Skype or Google Meet. Say your class is going over/through a book, and you think it would be really cool if they could ask the author question. Well, why not see if you can make that a reality? Lots of authors are willing to do this.
- Lastly, recording your lessons can be a great learning tool both for you and students. It can help you examine what you've done while teaching and try to improve upon that. It can also allow students to go back a rewatch "episodes" of your lessons if they so desire. Another way recorded lessons can be a help is for substitute teachers if they are maybe unfamiliar with a subject area or something, then they can literally have you teach a lesson even if you are not there.
Here is a quick example of a introduction video that you could have available to your students. I used Screencast-O-Matic to record the screen of my laptop and record the voiceover. It's a really quick look at some simple things for people to know about you. You could include more items such as where you went to College, your favorite hobbies, etc..
Next is a short video example of walking students through something. This could be any number of things, my video is on installing DuoLingo and then setting it up for use on your device. You can use videos to do walk throughs for pretty much anything really. I took screenshots of the process of setting up the app myself, then used another app called Puppet Edu to combine those screenshots into a slideshow/movie with voice over instructions.

- There are lots of wonderful Youtube channels out there on a myriad of different subject pertaining to academic achievement. These can be a fulfilling supplement to in class learning and they will sometimes explain things in ways that maybe "click" more with a student than the way you are teaching it. These channels can be a great resource for students who are having a tough time with a certain subject, such as say, math.
- Have the students create introduction videos themselves! This can be a fun way to have the students get to know each other and could even be done as a group project! Kids are always wanting to talk about themselves, give them a constructive outlet to do so!
- Have them put together and present a "Research Video". Use videos to give students a different way of showing off what they have learned! Kids don't want to always write reports or take a test on what they've learned. Instead, maybe have them demonstrate their mastery of a subject by having them make a video on it.
